Research by Leicester University suggests that between 30,000 and 60,000 people in the UK have nystagmus. Unlike glaucoma, cataracts and AMD, if you have nystagmus you’ll probably have it from infancy. Certainly, VI support teachers are very familiar with nystagmus and most report that over half the children they work with have the condition.“Thank you very much for speaking at our first conference and for joining us in our discussion. The feedback from all was extremely positive and we all learnt so much from your presentation.” – Norman Browne, Specialist Teacher Adviser Visual Impairment, Hampshire County Council.

The presentations range from short talks covering the main points to all day training sessions. The longer sessions include talks by scientific and/or medical professionals with extensive knowledge and experience of nystagmus. The training is adapted to the needs of individual groups and is available throughout the UK. Programmes are often arranged in cooperation with other organisations, such as the RNIB.“Very good hearing from people who have the condition as we were given ‘first hand’ knowledge” – delegate Liverpool workshop.
Typically, a training event will look at issues such as nystagmus and driving, nystagmus and sport, genetic issues and will also include:”I've been waiting for the evaluation summary to be completed which I am attaching here. As you will see, everybody found the course really worthwhile” – RNIB course organiser.
